Sabbath Moments - Fasting from fasting?

Sabbath Moments is a weekly meme hosted by Colleen at Thoughts on Grace. These are the moments when we keep our eyes on God and find the sacred in the ordinary.

We've had another little taste of spring this week. Thursday and Friday were gorgeous days and Michaela and I took advantage of the beautiful weather. We went for a long walk and then had a mini picnic on a bench that looks over a pond near our house. The pond was partly frozen but still pretty to look at. There wasn't a cloud in the sky! Considering how many overcast days we have had this month, to have the sun shining brightly on us was an opportunity we were not going to miss. We also walked through the woods which were a bit muddy much to Michaela's glee. I wonder how old a child has to be before they get over this love for mud?

Just kidding! I'm glad she likes mud! I've encouraged her to play in the dirt since she was a tot. I think dirt is good for kids and fun to play in, too.  Thankfully, kids are washable.

Earlier in the week I wrote about the "Fasting Cup" and the "Prayer Bowl". The Prayer Bowl is going very well, Michaela loves picking from it. The Fasting Cup? Well...not so good. She said she's not picking from that cup anymore! Lol! I guess it was harder than she thought it would be. I'm not that concerned because the idea was to teach her about Lent, not to make her feel overwhelmed and frustrated. Maybe when she's a bit older fasting will come easier. If I'm being honest, it doesn't always come easy for me either!

Her exact words:
I'm fasting from the Fasting Cup, Mom! Okay?

Kid logic. You gotta laugh.

  1. Fasting from the fasting cup! Ha Ha! Kid's logic is unbeatable.

I find fasting difficult because I am afraid I will fail at it. Fasting is hard so I have to pray that I will be able to fulfill the offering I promised to God for Lent. If we think we can do it by ourselves we are going to fail, but if we trust in God, He will help us keep our promise.

God bless you and your family!

  3. Well, at least she understands what "fasting" means! :-)

My Jewish friend loves to joke every year that she's giving up Christianity for Lent.

  4. Barb,
She's still picking from the prayer bowl each day so I'm pleased about that anyway. The fasting can wait a bit, she's only 7. She sees Randy and I fasting so she is still learning even if she's not participating.
    God bless you too, Barb!

  8. JBR,
Be thankful that you don't have to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, my friend! Or macaroni and cheese ;) Me...I have to pretend to like them (lol)!

  9. I love fasting from the fasting cup!! As you know, I have been behind in my reading, so I just read about the cup today...I like that idea. I just might have to use it myself. Have a wonderful day.

  10. Hi Mary! I hope you are doing well! Randy and I like the Fasting Cup and will probably do it each year. I never quite know what to fast from beyond the basics but the Lord DOES know so I ask Him to help me pick from the cup. The Cup is such a simple idea and yet it's been so very helpful.

  12. You know what's even worse? Peanut butter and fluff! They actually serve those things at me daughter's school much to my disgust. And I think my daughter sneaks them on the sly :) LOL!

  13. :) This totally made me smile! Fasting sure isn't easy so credit to her for giving it a shot!

It sounds like you enjoyed some lovely sunny weather, isn't that a blessing after cold, dark days?:)

  14. No, it isn't easy :) She tried and that's what counts!
The warm sunny weather was nice but didn't last. Yesterday we actually had a couple inches of snow! I'm definitely looking forward to more of those sunny days!
