Playing with fire

This is a good time to give your spiritual house a good fall cleaning. Simplify and toss whatever does not lead to God. The more room that you make for Him the better. After you get rid of unnecessary clutter ask Him to fill you with His Spirit. Everything matters and everything makes a difference. I keep seeing articles and books about being balanced and simplifying. When I peek at these I shake my head. No. The world is already balanced on the edge of a precipice and about to tip over. The suggestions I read are hilarious. Listen to this one: " Ask for help from the universe." Yeah, right. That's like asking a table to pray for you. I have a better one: Ask for help from the CREATOR of the universe. Here is another one that would have made me giggle if it wasn't so pitiful: "Cast a rune." No thanks. No wonder the True Rock is such a stumbling block for so many; they insist on playing with pebbles instead.

God first and then everything else will fall into place. This is the answer.

  2. Karinann,
The saddest thing is that the book I mentioned was in a Catholic bookstore. One of the other tidbits was, "Consult a psychic". Maybe they didn't look through the book before allowing it on the shelves.

  3. Mary, great post! What does "cast a rune" mean? I had read a book a while back called "Prayer for people who can't sit still" It was for people with adhd who struggle to sit still and focus on God. It suggested going to the lake, writing your prayer intention on a rock and throwing it into the lake. I thought it was a good idea for the kids, so we did it. I don't think they got much out of it. After one or two rocks, they were done. I think they get more out of Mass even if they fidget.

  4. Anne,
Casting a rune is a form of divination. I think that they are tiles or stones used in the occult. That's why I was surprised to see this book in a Catholic bookstore. I am guessing that it is similar to using tarot cards and things like that.
Don't worry, throwing rocks in a lake with a prayer intention is cute and nothing like casting runes:) By the way, let me know if you figure out a way to keep kids from fidgeting at Mass because I certainly haven't.[lol]

  6. I have to chuckle at the silliness of the new age philosophy. I'll stick to good theology any day.

  11. A lot of Cathoilc bookstores do not seem to take care to protect their customers who would expect 'safe' books there. It's a problem. Our one is full of angel cards, crystals and all sorts of weird books. I contacted them and pointed it out, but there has been no change. It's even sadder because the shop is attached to the Franciscan Friary. Sigh!
