Sabbath Moments - Laughter

Sabbath Moments is a weekly meme hosted by Colleen at Thoughts on Grace. These are the moments when we "let go and let God" and live in the present moment.

I love a good laugh. Laughter really IS good medicine and I often get a good dose of this natural remedy at sites run by certain bloggers. (See my post from yesterday.) I once read that humor can actually be a defense mechanism and while this is likely true in certain cases in other cases it's just plain old good fun. It helps us to not take life quite so seriously and at the same time also helps us not take ourselves quite so seriously either. In any case, it's definitely a good thing to have alongside a fallen nature! What would we do without this gift? Laughter is a precious gift from God! We may be born crying but this doesn't last long.

Laughter is catchy, too. I've loved this video from the very first time I saw it :)

  2. A man is worried that his wife is losing her hearing, so he consults a doctor. The doctor suggests that he try a simple at-home test on her: Stand behind her and ask her a question first from twenty feet away, next from ten feet, and finally right behind her.

So the man goes home and sees his wife in the kitchen facing the stove. He says from the door, “What’s for dinner tonight?”

    No answer.

Ten feet behind her, he repeats, “What’s for dinner tonight?”

    Still, no answer.

Finally, right behind her he says, “What’s for dinner tonight?”

And his wife turns around and says, “For the third time—chicken!”

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six-year-olds. After explaining the commandment to “Honor thy father and mother,” she asked, “Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?”

One little boy replied, “Thou shalt not kill.”

A man dies and goes to Heaven. St. Peter meets him at the pearly gates.

St. Peter says, "Here's how it works. You need 100 points to make it into Heaven. You tell me all the good things you've done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in."

"Okay" the man says, "I attended church every Sunday."

"That's good, says St. Peter, "that's worth two points."

"Two points?" he says. "Well, I gave 10% of all my earnings to the church."

"Well, let's see," answers Peter, "that's worth another 2 points. Did you do anything else?"

"Two points? Golly. How about this: I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans."

"Fantastic, that's certainly worth a point," the Saint says.

"Hmmm...," the man says, "I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart."

"That's wonderful," says St. Peter, "that's worth three points!"

"THREE POINTS!!" the man cries, "At this rate the only way I get into heaven is by the grace of God!"

    "Come on in!"

    WE DO NOT STOP LAUGHING BECAUSE WE GROW OLD;
WE GROW OLD BECAUSE WE STOP LAUGHING.

    God bless.

  3. Good message Mary. I need to laugh more these days. I remember as a kid with my childhood friends, we would laugh at the silliest things. Miss those times. Blessings.

  4. That is such a cute video. Who can't laugh with that baby? One think I like about your blog is the humor in your posts. We all need a good laugh - you are right.

  6. Victor,
Great jokes! Your site is one of the sites that make me laugh regularly. Especially the (meme)mimi muppet video - I'm giggling right now remembering it! The sneezing fits and the lady doing the can-can in France from a more recent post had me rolling! My daughter is so used to it by now that she said, "Oh, you must be on Victor's site." :)

Great quote about growing old. Did you notice that babies will laugh at the same thing 100 times? They are not jaded and do not get bored.

  7. JBR,
Kids laugh all the time - my friends and I were silly too :) I hope your mom is recovering quickly. I read your update yesterday and was hoping things went smoothly and that you got a chance to rest up a bit. You must be exhausted!
